Stucco is a plaster rendering made from lime or gypsum, sand or brick dust, and cement. It is applied while it is soft to walls and ceilings and smoothed to provide a perfect finish.
Stucco [USA] and render [UK] are basical the same thing and do the same type of job but are made up to a different constituency.....stucco being applied thicker and in more layers than render, and contains more lime and less sand. Normally render is used only externally whereas stucco can be applied internally using special techniques that allow it to be carved and incised to provide seemingly artwork that is a pleasure to look at.
Applied to external masonary stucco can be scribed to look like brickwork, scrolled onto various designs, have shapes carved into it and a host of other things, practical or aesthetic. It does take a long time to dry out but once set it is as hard as marble, which at one time was used in powder form to make it. When dry stucco can be painted or left natural, colours can also be added to the primary mix making painting unnecessary yet still leaving the surface virtually weatherproof and almost indestructable.
