The first part - the Introduction, is Longfellow setting the stage for the narrative of the song as sung by Nawadaha telling of the life of Hiawatha.

The first song proper is The Peace Pipe, in all there are twenty two songs, one introduction and one vocabulary section explaining the meanings of the Indian words Longfellow uses.
